I dislike the NFTA

Okay so in the news today there was an article about Schumer wanting to make Niagara Falls Airport a big cargo airport since it has such a huge runway and they could land planes from China and India. Okay. I get that. But the NFTA is on crack. They still insist on adding a passenger terminal to the airport. I know BNIA adds more and more passengers every year but its not like its a jam packed place with multiple terminals. And notice that its called Buffalo-NIAGARA. Its for the region…the region with the dying economy and population so please tell me why you will make an airport to compete with one you already have?

Okay so let me give you a better way to spend the 20 something million you want to spend on the passenger terminal in NF
1. Add more gates at BNIA
2. Extend runway at BNIA for those alleged foreign airlines that have an alleged interest in coming here.
3. Build a line from the Airport to Niagara Falls and then another one from the Airport to Downtown.

Its pretty simple my friends.

Oh yeah and PS the NFTA once said their would be a light rail line from downtown to Niagara Falls by 1996. Oh man those NFTAers, they sure know how to crack a joke.

Why NFTA and Schumer want to use Niagara Int’l for passenger service

The passenger terminal proposed for IAG has 2 gates and costs 27.5 million which is pretty darn cheap. Although there is currently no regularly scheduled passenger service, charter airlines frequent the air field. The current terminal is bad even for third world bus stations. That drives many charter airlines to Toronto and Hamilton instead of Niagara Falls. It costs between 4,000 and 7,000 USD to land a charter flight at Toronto Pearson plus you have to take whatever time slot they have around [3AM or some other God forsaken hour!]. Hamilton charges less [about 50% less than Pearson]. Also, most charter carriers currently fly into these Canadian airports and spend most of their time into Canada and a day trip to Niagara Falls. With a decent facility at Niagara, this would be reversed.

Also, Niagara would be a great place to attract some limited scheduled service. Skybus, Allegiant and other niche carriers could operate there. Myrtle Beach Direct Air is doing well there and has even upgraded its plane to a larger and newer variant [737-400].

Finally, extending the runway at BUF would be extremely expensive because you would have to place it over the Thruway or divert the Thruway a bit. It would cost way more than the last extension and it would be cheaper to build a terminal at Niagara.
